It’s Monarch Time in Cape May!
It is so exciting when it is Monarch time in Cape May! Seems like they are everywhere you look. I have always had a love affair with butterflies, so finding out that Cape May was on the migratory path was huge for me. Early Fall is just the time when those little cuties are passing through on their way down south for the winter. The fact that they travel up to 3,000 miles (according to National Geographic) during their migration is nothing short of a miracle! They often fly as far as 25-30 miles a day—just imagine how many tiny wing flaps that translates into! Cape May plays a significant…
How to find an awesome beach rental
Our family spent many years vacationing in a Cape May rental before we bought our beach house. I didn’t always do a great job in my selection— hoping to help you avoid my mistakes. With so many options, it helps to begin by asking yourself a few basic questions: What dates are you interested in going? Rentals are usually Saturday to Saturday/Sunday to Sunday during the peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Most daily or weekend rentals are usually available in the shoulder season: April, May, September, October etc. Are other friends and family joining you? Many houses in Cape May are large enough to accommodate multiple families. How…
Fall is Fun in Cape May
Fall is one of our favorite times to be in Cape May. Fall IS fun in Cape May. Most of the crowds have gone and quite a bit is still going on. Unlike some other shore towns, Cape May does not roll up the sidewalks on Labor Day! As the weather starts to turn a little crisp, the beach days start to dwindle, but there is so much to do. Family Fun Cape May MAC Scarecrow Alley located at the Physick Estate (1048 Washington Street) is in it’s 13th year. It runs from October 1 to November 2nd. The grounds of the estate are transformed into a Halloween spectacle. Everyone…
Are there really ghosts in Cape May?
Yes, there are ghosts in Cape May! Actually, the entire town is haunted. Some people claim it might be the most haunted place in the country. I have heard the theory that spirits linger because of the intense energy created as the Delaware River and Atlantic Ocean meet. I cover that a little more in my Mind-Body-Spirit in Cape May post. Cape May was featured on an episode of Haunted Towns and they speculate the high amount of quartz in the ground is one possible explanation. No one really knows why for sure – but many, many people have experienced it… The ghost in our 170 year old house is…
Three Great Museums in Cape May
We were always looking for new, fun and (sometimes) educational things to do with the kids while we were visiting Cape May. The beach was always the BIG draw for all of us— I’m not gonna lie. Carving out a little time around the water, sand and sun is so easy to do though. Bonus—we found it made for extra special lifelong memories. There are three great museums in Cape May that are definitely worth checking out! I also did another post a few months ago A Fun (almost no beach) Day with the Kids in Cape May that has some other awesome things to try! Naval Air Station (NAS)…
Railbiking in Cape May-try it!
Railbiking in Cape May is a must-try in my opinion. I mentioned it in my earlier blog post Ultimate Guide-Biking in Cape May. After trying it for myself on a recent visit to Cape May, I had to write an entire post about it. Yes, it is that much fun! It was an extremely hot and humid day in Cape May. We still had a great time. We bought our tickets over a week in advance on the Revolution Rail website. That is key as they are frequently sold out. The trip begins at the Welcome Center 609 Lafayette Street – which is the original train station (across from the…
Mind-Body-Spirit in Cape May
Cape May is the perfect spot to nurture your Mind-Body-Spirit. I have always felt a profound sense of calm and relaxation as soon as I enter Cape May. My blood pressure drops a little—everything just feels lighter. It literally happens every single time. Craig McManus, a medium who gives ghost tours in Cape May, believes that it is the East Coast version of Sedona and so do I. The local spirits have always known it, as I describe in my post Are there really ghosts in Cape May? If you are into meditating, there is no better place than on the beach in the early morning. Settling in on a…
Owning a Beach Rental – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Most days I still can’t believe that we own a beach rental in Cape May. I am typically not a risk taking, adventurous person by nature. My personality type is more of a high verify not a just take a leap and figure it out later type. In my earlier post, “Did you really say “Let’s buy a beach house?”, obsession was the only words that truly described my determination. Looking back on that time, it was as if I was taking inspired action. That was nine years ago and it has gone by in a flash. The Ugly Let me start with the ugly first and get that out…
Cape May Thank You Basket
We have great neighbors! They are always willing to grab our mail, water our garden and take care of our kitty Milo when we are at our Cape May house. We are, of course, always willing to reciprocate, but frankly it is pretty much one sided at this point. So what do you do to truly express how much you appreciate them? How do you let them know how grateful you are? Make your own Cape May Thank You Basket! That’s how! Spoiler alert – it was a huge hit. There are several container options such as: an actual basket, a large beach bag, kid’s sand bucket or even just…
Delicious food delivered right to my beach chair? Yes Please!!!
Let me paint a picture… You are relaxing in your comfy beach chair with your toes in the sand. The umbrella above your head is tilted just right to accept the relaxing ocean breezes and gently shade your face. The day could literally not be more perfect. You are watching your kids frolic in the waves — having the time of their lives. They spent the morning boogie boarding and jumping in and out of the waves. Here they come — running toward you laughing… “Were starving!!! What’s for lunch?” You had every intention of packing something this morning. Even planned it out in your head, but in the rush…
